11 years after its release, tech experts remain amazed how many people are still using Windows XP. That's both a credit to what is a solid operating system, and an indictment of just how poorly received Vista was (and how the economic slowdown has left some people wary about upgrading to Windows 7.)

But for all the Vista debate, few deny it brought some impressive visual improvements. BricoPack Crystal Clear lets you get a modern, cleaner look for Windows XP, while still retaining the functionality of the original.

Once you install the software (and you'll need to follow the instructions carefully to avoid possible problems), you get three "either/or" options, meaning a total of eight different combinations of looks. The first choice is between a more classic windows display where the window borders are solid, and one based on Vista and XP's Aero graphics, where the borders are translucent, making it arguably easier to keep track of your desktop.

Choice number two is whether to replace the Windows Start button with the penguin logo more familiar with Linux, a slightly odd option. Choice number three is whether to slim down the taskbar, which is the strip at the bottom of the machine.

The software also allows you to nominate colors for individual folders, which can make it easier to be visually organized.

Pros: Neat visual changes; simple to use.

Cons: Does make system changes, though they are reversible.

Conclusions: Won't change your life, but worth a look if you want to freshen up your desktop.
